Williams FW14B

The FW14B is the most technologically advanced car ever to race in Formula One, and it is the reason so much of it is now banned. Mansell won the first five races of 1992 and took the title with five rounds left. Active suspension, traction control and launch control were all outlawed for 1994, which is how a technical arms race ends.

Why it mattered

The idea. Give the computer control of the ride height and the car holds its best aerodynamic attitude everywhere, all the time

New on this car. Active suspension, traction control, semi-automatic gearbox and anti-lock brakes on one car

What it did. 17 wins and 21 poles across the two years. Mansell's 1992 title with nine wins in a season, and the 1992 constructors' championship.

A blank is a figure nobody published for this car. Where several teams quote the same number in a season it is usually the rule they were all built to rather than a measurement, so it is kept with the regulation limits instead of here.

10 wins can be traced to this chassis; its article publishes 17. Neither is wrong. A win counts here only where the entry list says which car the driver was in, and a team running two designs in a season does not always say. The unresolved seasons are listed below.
