The championship used the 2.5-mile oval 1950-60 and an infield road course running the opposite way round 2000-2007
The Indianapolis 500 counted towards the World Championship from 1950 to 1960 although F1 regulars almost never entered. The 2005 US GP was contested by six cars after Michelin declared its tyres unsafe for the banking — a reputational disaster for the sport in America.
