Ferrari 312T2B

The 312T line ran for six seasons and five designations and is the most successful thing Ferrari built before the Schumacher era. The 312T2 is the car Lauda crashed at the Nürburgring in 1976 and the car he was back in six weeks later. By the 312T5 in 1980 the flat-12 was too wide for ground effect and the car was hopeless - Ferrari finished tenth in the championship, and went turbo.

Why it mattered

The idea. Turn the gearbox sideways and put it ahead of the rear axle line: the mass moves forward and the car turns better

New on this car. The transverse gearbox - the T in the name is trasversale - which concentrated mass within the wheelbase

What it did. 89 races, 27 wins, 19 poles. Drivers' titles for Lauda (1975, 1977) and Scheckter (1979); constructors' in 1975, 1976, 1977 and 1979.

A blank is a figure nobody published for this car. Where several teams quote the same number in a season it is usually the rule they were all built to rather than a measurement, so it is kept with the regulation limits instead of here.

4 wins can be traced to this chassis; its article publishes 27. Neither is wrong. A win counts here only where the entry list says which car the driver was in, and a team running two designs in a season does not always say. The unresolved seasons are listed below.

In these seasons the team ran more than one design and no source says which car raced which round, so the results are left unattributed rather than guessed.
