Forghieri's flat-12 was the answer to the DFV: more power, and mounted so low that it lowered the whole car around it. Its drawback was width, which fought the ground-effect sidepods that arrived at the end of the decade - the reason Ferrari struggled in 1979-80 while Williams and Lotus flew.
