A deformable-structure chassis built to the new 1973 safety rules, developed for six years without ever being replaced

The M23 won titles three years apart with two different drivers and was still scoring points in its sixth season. Hunt's 1976 championship in it - won by a point after Lauda's Nurburgring crash and withdrawal at a flooded Fuji - is the season most people who do not follow the sport have still heard of.

83 races, 16 wins, 14 poles. Fittipaldi's 1974 title and McLaren's first constructors' championship, then Hunt's 1976 title.
