Ferrari 312B2

Forghieri's flat-12 was the answer to the DFV: more power, and mounted so low that it lowered the whole car around it. Its drawback was width, which fought the ground-effect sidepods that arrived at the end of the decade - the reason Ferrari struggled in 1979-80 while Williams and Lotus flew.

Why it mattered

The idea. A flat-12 sits low, so the centre of gravity sits low, and the engine can still be a stressed member

New on this car. The 180-degree flat-12 that Ferrari would use until turbos arrived in 1980

What it did. 10 wins across the 312B, B2 and B3. The B3-74 took Lauda to the 1975 title and Ferrari to the constructors'.

A blank is a figure nobody published for this car. Where several teams quote the same number in a season it is usually the rule they were all built to rather than a measurement, so it is kept with the regulation limits instead of here.

1 wins can be traced to this chassis; its article publishes 10. Neither is wrong. A win counts here only where the entry list says which car the driver was in, and a team running two designs in a season does not always say. The unresolved seasons are listed below.
