The double diffuser, developed at Honda and inherited when Honda withdrew
Honda spent a fortune on the 2009 car and then pulled out of Formula One in December 2008. Brawn bought the team for a pound, fitted a Mercedes engine to a chassis designed around a Honda one, and won six of the first seven races. Rivals protested the diffuser and lost at the FIA International Court of Appeal in April. It is the only team to have won the championship in the only season it ever existed - Mercedes bought it at the end of the year.
