Split the turbocharger in half and put the compressor at the front of the V and the turbine at the back, joined by a shaft through the vee
The split-turbo layout, which shortened the intake path, cooled the charge air better and packaged the whole power unit tighter than anything else on the grid
The 2014 hybrid rules were the biggest engine change since 1989 and Mercedes had understood them years earlier. The split turbo is the single decision that bought them the next eight constructors' championships: Ferrari and Renault had to redesign around it and were years catching up. Hamilton and Rosberg won 16 of 19 races and finished first and second in the championship.
